Intravenous Injection Pain and Discomfort of Chemotherapy Patients

Abstract
This study was aimed at discovering intravenous injection pain, discomfort during intravenous infusion, discomfort at side injection of chemotherapeutic agents and discomfort related to chemotherapy and contributing the development of appropriate nursing intervention for patients with chemotherapy.

The subjects were 57 cancer patients who received intravenous chemotherapy regularly in OPD injection rooms of D medical center and Y medical center in Taegu, Data were collected four times per person so total cases were 212.

Data were collected from June 23 to July 12, 1997, by face-to face interviews, and the data analysis was done by qualitative research method and validity assured by 1 injection room nurses and 2 patients who received intravenous chemotherapy.

The results of the study were summarized as follows :

1. Intravenous injection pain ; 23 Statements were extracted and then 4 categories ¢¥Pain sensation¢¥, ¢¥Pain intensity¢¥, ¢¥Related to injection site¢¥, and ¢¥Mood were classified, ¢¥Shap pain¢¥ and ¢¥Dull pain¢¥ subcategories were included in ¢¥Pain sensation¢¥, ¢¥No¢¥, ¢¥Moderate¢¥, and ¢¥Severe¢¥ were included in ¢¥Pain intensity¢¥, ¢¥Attention of injection site¢¥, and change injection site¢¥ were included in Related to injection site¢¥.

2. Discomforts during intravenous infusion ; 22 statements were extracted and then 6 categories ¢¥Nausea¢¥ ¢¥Injection site pain¢¥ ¢¥Smell¢¥ Positive response¢¥ ¢¥Systemic Symptoms¢¥ and ¢¥Emotional discomfort¢¥ were classified.

3. Discomforts at side injection of chemotherapeutic agents; 17 statements were extracted and then 5 categories ¢¥Pain¢¥ ¢¥Feel cool¢¥ ¢¥Smell¢¥ ¢¥Nausea¢¥, and ¢¥Systemic symptoms¢¥ were classified.

4. Discomfort related to chemotherapy; 69 statements were extracted and then 16 categories ¢¥Nausea¢¥ ¢¥Loss of appetite¢¥ ¢¥Vomiting¢¥ ¢¥Fatigue¢¥ ¢¥Headache¢¥ ¢¥Heavy chest¢¥ ¢¥Fever¢¥ ¢¥salivation¢¥ ¢¥Diarrhea¢¥ ¢¥Stomatitis¢¥, and etc. were classified.
